Atlas hike grade decoder -- can you actually do this?
Most Atlas guides rate hikes as 'easy', 'moderate', or 'hard'. That misses the real difficulty: scree, exposure, altitude, and weather window. Toubkal in July is one hike; Toubkal in February is a different hike. This tool grades properly.
The tool
What this solves
Most Atlas grading reduces to 'easy/medium/hard' and misses the actual decision: is the scree manageable, is the exposure safe for non-climbers, is the altitude manageable for low-experience hikers. This tool grades each hike by exposure, scree, altitude, and the season.
How to read the result
Score: combines fitness, altitude experience, and season. 5+ recommended, 3-4 doable, 1-2 challenging, 0 skip.
Exposure: high (Toubkal summit), moderate (M'Goun), low (Jebel Sirwa). High exposure hikes need confident footing.
Scree: high (Toubkal final slope), low (M'Goun ridge), moderate (Jebel Sahro). High scree = slippery, tiring.
Limitations
These are heuristic grades based on published trail reports, operator surveys, and personal logs. Snow and ice change the difficulty dramatically -- Toubkal in February with crampons is one thing, in February without crampons is dangerous. The Morocco guide-law (mandatory above 3000m) is not enforced everywhere; verify your guide.
FAQ
Do I need a guide for Toubkal?
Yes -- by law, and by safety. The final scree slope has caused multiple deaths of unguided trekkers each year.
Can I climb Toubkal in winter?
Yes -- with crampons, ice axe, and an experienced winter guide. Not for first-time hikers.
Is M'Goun easier than Toubkal?
Multi-day yes; day hike about the same. M'Goun summit day is similar altitude, less scree, more walking.
