Dress code decoder -- what to wear where

Most Morocco guides say 'cover shoulders and knees'. That's true for the medina, but for a Berber village, a Saharan camp, a conservative gathering, or a beach, the right answer is different. This tool lays out the rule per context.

The tool

What this solves

'Dress modestly' is the wrong answer for every setting. In a Saharan camp, modest means beachwear during the day, long sleeves by evening. In a Berber village, modest means long sleeves and a head scarf. In a touristic medina, modest means knees and shoulders. This tool gives the right answer per setting.

How to read the result

Verdicts: relaxed (beachwear fine), standard (cover knees + shoulders), stricter (cover up + long sleeves), strict (head scarf + loose covering).

Traveller matters: female norms are stricter than male, especially in conservative settings.

Season adjusts practicality -- hot weather loosens expectations because loose linen is the natural choice.

Limitations

Dress code is socially enforced, not legally enforced in Morocco (with the exception of mosque entry). Conservative settings vary by family; some families are very strict, some very relaxed. When in doubt, observe and follow the host.

FAQ

Can women wear shorts in Morocco?

In Marrakech / Fes medina: long shorts (to the knee) ok. Shorter than that: expect attention. In Berber villages: not ideal; wear long trousers.

Do I need a head scarf?

Only in mosques (Hassan II in Casablanca is the only mosque that admits non-Muslims) and some conservative gatherings. Otherwise optional.

Can I wear a bikini at the beach?

Yes -- on the beach, not at the caf-- next to the beach. Mixed beaches like Essaouira are common; tourist beaches like Taghazout are fine for Western beachwear.
