MAD cash-vs-card bands -- when street rate matters and when it doesn't

Morocco has a managed exchange rate for the dirham. The official rate and the parallel rate are typically within 1-2%. The question of 'cash vs card' is usually not about the rate -- it's about whether the vendor takes cards at all.

The tool

What this solves

Most travellers worry about the FX margin; in practice, the FX margin is 1-2% whether you use a bureau, ATM, or card. The real question is whether the vendor takes cards at all. This tool classifies the category, applies the rate, and tells you which channel saves you money.

How to read the result

Cardable categories (modern restaurants, supermarkets, fuel, tour operators, trains): the choice is about your home-bank FX margin (1-3%) vs the bureau margin (0.5-1%).

Cash-only categories (riad, souk, medina restaurant): the choice is not yours. Bring MAD.

Spread is the gap between official and street rate. It's typically 1-2%; only matters for amounts above 5,000 MAD.

Limitations

Bureau de change rates vary. Marrakech medina (rue Mouassine) is typically the best rate in the medina. The official rate published by Bank Al-Maghrib is the legal tender; the street rate applies in informal exchange and for large amounts. ATMs offer the official rate minus 1.5% FX margin.

FAQ

Can I pay in EUR/USD and get a discount?

Sometimes, especially in the medina where the seller prefers hard currency to avoid bank fees. Discount is typically 1-3%.

Should I bring all cash or use ATMs?

Mix. Bring 200-300 EUR/USD as backup, use ATMs for the bulk. Cards beat face cash for amounts above 5,000 MAD.

Is the parallel rate legal?

It's tolerated for small informal transactions. For any formal exchange, banks and bureaux use the official rate. Don't bring more than 5,000 MAD equivalent in cash and declare it.
