Sahara day vs night -- what to pack by month
The Sahara is not one temperature. In January, the days are 18--C and nights are 4--C. In July, the days are 42--C and nights are 25--C. The right clothing is different. This tool visualizes the day-night swing and recommends layers.
The tool
What this solves
Sahara trips are planned by people who don't realize the day-night swing. A March trip needs a fleece for night. A November trip needs a thermal. The same packing list does not work in March and October. This tool visualizes the swing and recommends layers.
How to read the result
Day-night swing is the most important number. Above 20--C = serious swing, pack layers.
Sun index: 9+ in summer means full protection; 5 in spring means SPF still recommended.
Erg Chebbi is more visited; Erg Chigaga is wilder; M'hamid is southern, hotter.
Limitations
Sahara figures are station data from Errachidia and Zagora -- the actual temperature at the dune crest in midday can be 5-7--C hotter. Night temperatures are accurate; day temperatures are conservative.
